Cinematography vs Documentary Detail
Wedding Cinematography is the art of using video, audio and music to tell a story as opposed to simply recording an event from beginning to end. Unlike Old style videography, In cinematic Video’s the entire event is not recorded. Small clips of moments ; images and sounds that relate to your personalities and the story of wedding day are captured. These pieces are filmed in different angles, movements and with different camera lenses to enhance the feelings of that moment. Most of the times, there are two cameras doing this work. One camera focuses on the main event, and the second camera gets the reactions of the guests, getting both sides of the story.
Documentary style Video’s are shot with the cameras with fixed lenses and small Sensor that have a lower resolution and do not perform well in low light situations. Cinematic videos are shot using 35mm Camera /HD DSLR cameras (the same cameras that professional photographers use) with prime lenses (the best in class) to give a wedding film that “movie look”. Camera movements are extremely important to enhance the grandeur of the event. Some of the equipment that is used in Cinematography are Sliders, Steadicam, Drone for aerial Footage, Monopods, Cranes and professional audio recording devices as opposed to just a tripod. This same equipment is being currently used in movies, TV shows and commercials.
Documentary wedding videos show an event from beginning to an end. A Cinematic film uses storytelling. The best way to put is by comparing a home video vs. a movie. The storytelling experience of a movie is more dynamic so it will keep your attention from the beginning to the end. When it comes time to editing a wedding film, all those moments captured are then are interwoven with meaningful sound bites. Sound bites are short pieces of dialogue, it could be the groom saying his vows or a funny speech or maybe something a father said in while waiting to see his daughter as a bride for the first time.Traditional wedding documentaries could be edited in 10-20 hours; cinematic films are more like 40-80 hours.
Documentary Style Video will usually give you a 2-3 hour video, most cinematographers in the industry give you a 25 minute film. Some couples are afraid they will not see enough in 25 minutes. But it is as simple as the old rule of quality over quantity. A wedding film will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions in 25 minutes but without boring anyone. Wedding films leave a stronger impact and will be watched hundreds of times. They help you remember and relive the happiest day of your life.
